From Afghanistan to England, my hopes became reality

Forced to flee Afghanistan, Hadia arrived in England with big dreams and the courage to pursue them through education and service.

My name is Hadia, and I’m from Afghanistan. In my homeland, girls are denied the right to education, and dreams like mine seem impossible. But I am one of those girls who dares to dream. My greatest wish has always been to become a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador – to protect human rights, support refugees and help those who have lost their homes find hope and opportunity. Today, I am grateful that England has given me the chance to follow that dream.

I came to the UK in 2023, but I feel as if my journey really began when I started my studies here in September 2024. Before college, I felt nervous and uncertain – about my teachers, my classmates and my English skills. But the moment I began my studies in Health and Social Care, everything changed. I discovered joy in learning and purpose in growing. My teachers were always kind and encouraging, and my college quickly became a second home for me.

Everyone is kind and respectful to each other – I feel like a human being, not defined by my nationality or my past.

By June 2025, at the end of my first year, I was honoured to receive two awards and the title of 2025 Student of the Year – the proudest moments of my academic journey so far. Now in my second year, I volunteer at one of the city’s largest hospitals, gaining invaluable experience and learning the power of service. There is no greater happiness than knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life.

“When I came to England, hope turned into action and possibility became real. I felt like I was taking my first steps towards the life I had always imagined.”

I love England for its warmth, kindness and its diversity. Over the past three years, I have learned that humanity and compassion are universal languages. No matter where you come from or why you arrive here, kindness is what enables us to contribute to society and build meaningful connections.

I will always stand with refugees, because I understand their struggles and share their dreams. I know firsthand that migration is often not a choice but a necessity. For those who leave everything behind, with nothing but hope in their hearts, the journey ahead requires courage, resilience and faith. If we are given the chance, refugees can grow, serve and shine.

This is my message for refugees around the world: your dreams are valid. Believe in yourself and never give up. You can change the world with your thoughts and dreams. You are worth it.
