What is the Refugee Ribbon appeal?

In our increasingly volatile world, refugees in places like Lebanon, Sudan and Ukraine face unimaginable fear and hardship. In the face of such suffering and injustice, we can sometimes feel powerless and overwhelmed – but you can help.

Every act can make a difference for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Donate now to help provide food, shelter and protection, and get your Refugee Ribbon to wear with pride, as a powerful act of kindness and solidarity.

Watch this video to see how your support can help UNHCR deliver lifesaving aid and protection to displaced families in countries like Syria.

How your gift to the Refugee Ribbon appeal can help save lives

Abel was a musician in Bambouti, making souls happy with his soft voice. Music was his source of livelihood for his family. He did not want to leave all that behind, but when shelling started, they had no choice but to run. Amidst the shelling, Abel tragically lost his wife and the mother of his two children.

People forced to flee are among the hardest hit by the global humanitarian funding cuts. UNHCR’s commitment to serving refugees remains unwavering, but without urgent funding, decades of gains in refugee protection could disappear. To continue to help displaced families, UNHCR relies more than ever before on the kindness of supporters in the UK and around the world.

Have you been inspired by the Refugee Ribbon appeal and want to take further action?

If you believe that every person fleeing conflict has the right to seek safety and protection, there are many ways you can join us and stand with refugees. Nobody chooses to flee their home, but we can all help displaced people recover their dignity, rebuild their lives and feel safe again.

Refugee Ribbon FAQs

Where do the donations go?

When you donate to support the Refugee Ribbon appeal, your gift will help families who’ve been forced to flee. It’ll help ensure that UNHCR teams on the ground – in countries like Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sudan and Yemen – can deliver lifesaving essentials to communities in need.

How do I get my ribbon?

To donate and order your ribbon, please visit our website here. We will send your ribbon in the post, with the donation acknowledgment letter.

When will I receive my ribbon?

You should receive your ribbon within two weeks of your request. If you don’t receive your ribbon within two weeks, please reach out to our Supporter Care team at [email protected] or by phone on 020 8183 0127.

Can I show my support without donating?

Yes, by wearing your ribbon you’ll be joining others in standing in solidarity with refugees and displaced people. If you can also take the step of giving a donation, your support will help provide lifesaving aid to families in need. Any contribution, no matter how small, it is greatly appreciated.

How can I encourage others to join?

If you’ve got friends and family who might be interested in wearing a ribbon too, you can invite them to order a ribbon by sharing this page.

How can I order more ribbons for friends and family etc.?

If you’d like to request more than one ribbon, please contact our Supporter Care team via email or phone and let us know how many ribbons you’d like. If you’re requesting ribbons for a special occasion or event, such as your wedding, we’d love to hear more about your plans! Please also note that ribbons are limited, so we might not be able to accommodate requests for high volume.

Is the ribbon made from environmentally friendly materials?

Refugee ribbons are made from recycled PET plastic (rPET) – a plastic made from repurposed waste, like plastic bottles or food packaging. Because it’s made from recycled materials, rPET is more environmentally friendly than many alternative plastics.

Why is the ribbon blue?

Blue is a colour that’s conveys stability, calmness and trust. It’s also the main colour used in the United Nations flag, which uses a blue background to symbolise peace and unity.

I just donated, but it wasn’t to the Refugee Ribbon Appeal, can I still order a ribbon?

Yes, please contact our Supporter Care team and once we verify your details, we will send a ribbon to your address.
