Why fundraising for refugees is so important

If you believe that every person fleeing conflict has the right to seek safety and protection, there are many ways you can join us and stand with refugees. Your fundraising will help us build a community of people who are taking action and making a difference. Thanks to incredible supporters like yourself, UNHCR teams can deliver humanitarian relief to families left with no one else to turn to. From rushing lifesaving support to civilians fleeing the frontlines of conflict, to ongoing care, such as education and healthcare, for families whose lives may remain in limbo for years.

How you can help

You can fundraise on your own or as part of a community. The more people you get involved the bigger the impact we can have together.

Who can get involved?

  • Individuals

  • Schools and Colleges

  • University Students (RAG groups for example)

  • Churches and Faith Groups

  • Colleagues

  • Family and Friends

  • Sports teams

  • Community and Hobby Groups

If you’ve already taken action – a heartfelt thank you on behalf of our team and the displaced families that will benefit from your dedication and support.

Fundraising FAQs

Can I make a donation for refugees from or in a particular country?

We always ask our supporters to first consider making a general donation to UK for UNHCR as your gift can then go towards funding our vital, lifesaving operations all around the world, and we can direct your donation to the most vulnerable people as new emergencies arise. However, you can make donations to specific UK for UNHCR appeals for certain regions, like our Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine or Yemen appeals. For more information about our different appeals and where UNHCR operates, please visit our ‘Where we help’ webpage at the following address: unrefugees.org.uk/where-help-is-needed/

How do I fundraise online?

Once you’ve decided on your fundraising activity, the first thing we usually recommend is to set up an online giving page on a platform such as JustGiving to collect all your donations online. UK for UNHCR is registered on JustGiving, so you can set up your page directly by following this link: justgiving.com/unhcr. You will be able to provide details of your fundraising activity, share updates, and create an online page for friends, family and other supporters to donate to.

Can I donate clothes, blankets, toys and other items?

Unfortunately, we are unable to collect such items. UNHCR have their own supplies in various locations which are distributed to refugee camps in a cost-effective and efficient way. However, we very much appreciate the thought, and suggest trying your local charity shops.

How can I volunteer for UK for UNHCR?

We are incredibly grateful for your interest in contributing to our vital work. We do not currently have any volunteering opportunities with our charity, however for more information on how you can volunteer for the UN Refugee Agency, please visit United Nations Volunteers.

Do you have any resources to help with my fundraising?

We are here to support you every step of the way. From sharing advice on how to promote your event and who to involve, to collecting donations from your network and starting your fundraising project. If you would like digital and physical resources, please get in touch with our team using the form above or emailing us at [email protected]
